Addressing Critical Challenges in Endoscopy Training

Instructor Safety

Provides a safe and supportive learning environment for both instructors and trainees, helping to reduce anxiety for everyone involved.

Patient Safety

Minimises patient risk by enabling trainees to refine their skills on a simulator through repeated practice until they reach competence.

Accessibility

Resolves issues of accessibility to realistic simulators when acquiring endoscopy skills.

Efficiency

Offers an efficient route to competence and skill development, alleviating resource challenges like costly theatre time and the need for expert supervision.

Solving the Problem

By addressing key challenges in endoscopy training, this solution ensures a more effective and supportive learning experience for both trainees and instructors.

Here’s how it helps:

Safe & Stress-Free Training

Training facilitators can plan a variety of learning outcomes to meet the needs of trainees in an environment that is free from risk.

More Accessible & Affordable

Provides a versatile, cost-effective and portable alternative to existing training simulators, offering a variety of interchangeable inserts that become progressively more challenging as the trainee advances.

Enhances Autonomous Learning

Due to accessibility, trainees can practice and refine their skills independently without relying on dedicated theatre time and supervision from a training facilitator.

Is there any evidence to prove the effectiveness of simulators for endoscopy training and upskilling?

Within individual RCTs,  simulation training has been shown to improve caecal intubation rate in the first 10 colonoscopies,78 increase competency during the first 100 cases with higher completion rates (Siau aet al, 2022). The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Preservation and Incorporation of Valuable Endoscopic Innovations committee felt that the threshold for benefit to recommend widespread simulator use would be a >25% reduction in median number of clinical cases to attain competency (Cohen, Bosworth and Chak, 2012).

Why do I need to invest in a simulator?

Mastering endoscopic procedures is complex and requires long hours of practice. In this context, simulation-based training represents a valuable opportunity for acquiring technical and cognitive skills, suiting the different trainees’ learning pace and limiting the risks for the patients (Finocchiaro et al, 2021).

Simulation training for endoscopic technical skills is encouraged in conjunction with conventional endoscopy training to enhance development of early endoscopic technical skills. Trainee simulator-based training should be directly supported by appropriately skilled trainers/ supervisors (Siau at al, 2022).

Aren't simulators quite unrealistic?

InnovaScope simulators are developed to ensure realism, developing initial hand/eye coordination as a trainee, and later learning and upskilling of therapeutic interventions as an advanced trainee or qualified practitioner.
